What is food allergy?

A food allergy is a “hypersensitivity” reaction to a food. It is a harmful reaction to foods which normally don’t cause reactions in normal non-allergic people. Peanut and seafood are among the most common foods causing allergies. Patients with food allergies may have symptoms of skin itching, hives, swelling of face, lips, tongue, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or even asthma attacks, difficulty breathing, or even anaphylaxis, which is an extreme allergy attack with fainting, collapse, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure and even death. Food allergy can range from mild disease with bothersome but not life-threatening symptoms such as itching of the mouth or throat after eating raw fruits or vegetables, to a very serious matter, which can lead to sudden collapse and death. If you are uncertain as to how severe your food allergies are, or if you would like to know what you are allergic to, you should consult with your primary care physician who may decide that you need evaluation and treatment by an allergist.
